Field updates
Wednesday 30 July
With the recent wet weather, a few of you have been asking if our sports fields will be open tonight, Wednesday 30 July.
While at this stage our fields will remain open, please carefully consider the impact, and apply good judgement when deciding to use the grounds.
Please consider risks such as health and safety hazards to both players and spectators and possible turf damage for games for the near future.

Field recommendations – traffic light system
Knowing when to use a field after or during bad weather can often be a tricky decision. Learn about the traffic light system and how it could help you know when to call off a game or training session.
Sports park users will receive an email to identify what colour the fields are in during or after we’ve encountered bad weather.
Green: Fields can remain open but be careful. Please consider the impact of possible future damage and health and safety when deciding to use the grounds.
Orange: It is strongly advised you consider postponing games and training while we wait out the bad weather. If you do decide to play on the field, consider risks to health, slips and turf damage.
Red: You cannot play, the field is closed. You will receive an email with further information on what is happening
Help keep our sports parks clean and green
It's great to see teams and supporters out enjoying our sports parks, however, we are currently experiencing issues with large volumes of rubbish being left behind after games. To keep our sports parks clean and green, we need all sports groups to play their part.
Here are a couple of pointers for helping reduce and dispose of game/event day waste:
- Look at ways that teams and players can help reduce the amount of waste generated. For example, rather than using single use plastics, encourage players to bring along reusable bottles on game day and pack half-time snacks into reusable food containers.
- Provide and empty your own bins on game/event days. The rubbish bins installed at our parks are intended for general use by park visitors and can fill up quickly if used during sports games and other large events. We ask that you instead bring along their own bins for use during games/events that you empty afterwards. We’re happy to store empty bins on site in an agreed location between games/events – please reach out if you are interested in arranging this.
- Clubs please encourage players and parents to take home their rubbish with them. This will help to reduce waste left at our sports parks.
We appreciate everyone doing their bit to keep our parks clean and enjoyable for all.
Managing turf wear and tear
To enjoy the season and keep our parks in top shape, here are some key tips:
Avoid overuse
- Rotate training areas and field line markings and move goals to spread wear.
- Perform warm-ups, cool-downs, and cone work off the main playing surfaces.
- Limit sessions on worn fields and avoid damaged areas.
- Train at different parks or away from game fields.
Wet conditions
- On wet days, consider alternative training like hill work, road runs, or indoor activities.
- Respect field closures to protect player safety and field longevity.
- Remember all it can take is one extremely wet game to severely damage a field, reducing traction and drainage.
- Rope off areas to allow turf recovery.
Other ways to help
- Ensure players and children do not swing on goal posts.
- Report any damage or hazards to Council promptly via Antenno.
By following these tips, we can ensure our fields remain in great condition for everyone to enjoy.
Carpark updates at seven parks and reserves
Updates will soon be made across carparks at seven parks and reserves to help encourage parking turnover, reduce commuter parking and make it easier for park visitors to find spaces.
The carparks where updates are being made are at Innes Common, Hinemoa Park, Melville Park, Mahoe Park, Gower Park, Norris Ward Park and Hamilton Lake Domain.
The updates include the installation of new signage to make existing parking restrictions clearer, and the introduction of time-limits on some parking spaces, mobility spaces and loading zones. These changes were approved by the Traffic, Speed Limit and Road Closure Hearings Panel at its 12 March 2025 meeting – the agenda and minutes from the meeting are available here.
Educational signage is being installed at the carparks this month to inform carpark users of the upcoming changes, with enforcement of parking restrictions to begin in these locations from Monday 6 October. Users of these carparks are advised to follow the sign-posted restrictions to avoid incurring a fine.
Playing fair off the field
We love seeing teams and supporters enjoying our sports parks, but we’ve been noticing a high volume of rubbish at these sites. The bins provided at our parks are intended for general visitors and can fill up quickly during sports games and events. A reminder that sports groups are responsible for managing their own rubbish, so please bring bins or bags for use during your fixtures and take everything away with you afterwards.
Motorbike use also remains an ongoing issue across our parks. To help curb this behaviour, we ask that all instances of motorbike use at parks are reported to NZ Police by phoning 111 (as it is happening and if people or property are at risk) or 105 (after the fact). To assist Police, please record as much information as you are safely able to, including descriptions of the bikes and riders, and take photos or video footage if possible.
Thank you in advance for helping keep our parks clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.
