The Celebrating Age Centre at the south end of Victoria Street has been closed over recent years due to issues with the roof, water tightness and pests.
The like-for-like renewal of Celebrating Age Centre is part of Council’s commitment to looking after its existing assets and will result in the return more than 1000m2 of central city community facility space.
The renewal will see the building footprint retained, the roof strengthened, and improvements made to the fire, electrical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to bring them up to modern building standards.
The work is expected to be complete in the second half of 2026.
The Celebrating Age Centre building has water tightness issues that forced it to close. This work is needed to address those issues and repair parts of the building that has sustained water damage, as well as make other renewal work to bring it up to modern building standards.
No, the existing building footprint will be retained, and any alterations or internal reconfigurations are outside the scope of this work.
The Celebrating Age Centre has been occupied by community groups serving our older people since 1979 and has provided bookable space for the wider community.
The building was closed over recent years due to issues with the roof, water tightness and pests.
Once complete, Age Concern will once again occupy part of the building. Expressions of Interest (EOI) will be sought in early 2026 from other community and recreation groups interested in leasing other parts of the facility. More information on the EOI process is available here - Community facilities – Expressions of Interest | Hamilton City Council.
