Project summary

What we’re doing

We’re making way for a new open space within Hamilton Gardens, by removing the disused Glasshouses, near the Victorian Flower Garden. The glasshouses have been closed since 2020, as part of cost-saving measures.

The entry archway and the black and white tiled flooring will be retained, and a new grassed area with surrounding gardens will be planted during winter and spring. This open space will be free to access for all visitors and not part of the enclosed gardens.

Why we’re doing it

The maintenance costs for these buildings were high, due to their relative age and energy efficiency. A new, more efficient glasshouse is planned for the upcoming Pasifika Garden, which will showcase productive plants from the South Pacific.

By removing the building, we are making way for an open space for the community to enjoy.

This project will

  • Provide a new open space within Hamilton Gardens

  • Keep iconic elements including the entry archway

  • Be free to access for all visitors

Frequently asked questions

Are the glasshouses heritage-listed buildings?

No. In the 1960s, glasshouses were brought over from Memorial Park to Hamilton Gardens. These were since demolished, and the current buildings installed.

The current glasshouses had been considered for heritage status under Plan Change 9, but were removed from the list of proposed buildings as they don’t meet the criteria.

What will happen to the nearby trees?

Five noteable trees are in the area surrounding the glasshouse, with one additional tree expected to be given heritage status under Plan Change 9. Our project planning has carefully considered these trees, and we’ve adapted our project methods to protect them.

Why were the glasshouses closed?

The glasshouses were closed as part of cost-saving measures in 2020. The buildings had high maintenance costs, with only a small number of visitors.

Why are we demolishing them now?

After closing in 2020, funding was allocated to demolish the glasshouses in the 2021-2031 Long-Term Plan. We expect the project to be complete before the end of financial year.

How will this work impact me?

There will be no impact on the road or footpath of Cobham Drive. Visitors to Hamilton Gardens may see a small section of footpath fenced off, outside the Glasshouse – this is to ensure a safe work area for the project team.

What's happening to the plants?

Many of the plants found new homes when the glasshouses closed in 2020. Some were given to other cities, like Wellington and New Plymouth. Many plants were rehomed at Hamilton Gardens, or to animal enclosures at Hamilton Zoo. The Friends of Hamilton Gardens also hosted large plant sales to raise funds for Hamilton Gardens. Commercial nurseries in Hamilton also bought some of the plants. Any remaining plants will be removed as part of this project.
