We are making changes to the northern edge of Hinemoa Park alongside Mill Street, in the area known as Pit Lane.
The work includes some greening of the concrete space to create a visual and physical boundary between the road and park, and a shared cycle lane and pedestrian footpath, and will enable the area to be used when needed as overflow parking area for events.
Work is due to commence on 15 January 2025 and is expected to take around four months to complete, with this area closed during construction.
The changes aim to improve safety between the park and road and provide an enhanced space for people to enjoy.
Hinemoa Park is part of the West Town Belt – an important asset for Hamilton as one of its largest continuous green spaces – with these improvements aligning with the West Town Belt Masterplan.
This work is needed to improve safety in this area, by creating a visual and physical barrier between the park and Mill Street. With the park being a key connection through to FMG Stadium Waikato and the K’aute Pasifika fale, it is important that the area is made as safe as possible for park users, pedestrians and cyclists.
The area where the work is taking place will be closed off to the public during construction. There will also be some noise during the work, particularly during cutting of the concrete surfacing, and there will be a shoulder closure along Mill Street. The work will not impact on the flow of traffic.
Hinemoa Park is part of the West Town Belt, with these improvements aligning with the West Town Belt Masterplan. The West Town Belt, a 54ha band of open space stretching from Lake Rotoroa to the Waikato River, is an important asset for Hamilton as one of its largest continuous green spaces. You can read more about the West Town Belt Masterplan here.
No, public car parking will not be available in this location. While we are aware that commuters were parking here up until recently, this was not a designated car parking area.
There is a range of parking options in central Hamilton. Information on the parking options is available on our website here.
